Court Overturns Stoning Sentence of Woman in Nigeria from the NYtimes.com

KATSINA, Nigeria, Sept. 25 — Amina Lawal, the Nigerian peasant woman sentenced under Islamic law to death by stoning for having had sex outside marriage, was acquitted and set free today by the highest religious court in her state.
Her case had become a flashpoint in the debate over the reintroduction of Shariah, or Islamic law, across northern Nigeria and a knotty political problem for a nation already inflamed by deep religious and regional divides. Death-by-stoning is not allowed under the Nigerian constitution.
Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, is technically a secular republic, but Shariah has swept through the largely Muslim north during the last three years and has been introduced in a dozen northern states.
Shariah governs family law in a wide range of countries, but it has been applied to criminal offenses only in a handful of nations, like Saudi Arabia, Iran and Afghanistan under Taliban rule. In Nigeria, the code does not apply to Christians.
Things are changing even if its one out of billions, things are changing. But i guess they just forgot to say her child's face shouldn't be shown all around the world haven't they?
8/13/05 - It's probably not a great idea not to go to your medical appoitment when you get the best job they could have probably offered you, just because you want to mantein that perfect record of never taking a blood test.
